Titanium foil thickness tolerance: standard vs precision rolling

Thickness tolerance is the most important dimension to control when buying titanium foil. This guide explains standard vs. precision tolerance and how to specify it correctly.

Why foil thickness tolerance matters

Titanium foil is used in thin-gauge applications such as fuel-cell and electrolyzer components, heat-exchanger fins, battery parts, and precision shims. If the thickness varies beyond tolerance, downstream forming, coating, and assembly can fail. A tighter tolerance costs more, so the goal is to specify the tightest tolerance the application actually needs.

Standard vs. precision tolerance

Commercial titanium foil is supplied to ASTM B265, which defines nominal thickness and standard tolerance bands. For demanding applications, precision rolling can hold thickness to about ±0.002 mm across a 0.02–1.0 mm range, with width up to about 680 mm. Precision slitting and tension leveling help maintain edge quality and flatness alongside thickness.

Tolerance levels at a glance

Level Typical thickness tolerance Best for
Standard (ASTM B265) Standard band per thickness General industrial use
Precision rolled ±0.002 mm Electrolyzers, fuel cells, shims, electronics

How to specify foil tolerance in an RFQ

  • Nominal thickness: state the target, e.g., 0.05 mm.
  • Tolerance: state the acceptable band, e.g., ±0.002 mm.
  • Width and flatness: state slit width and any flatness requirement.
  • Measurement method: note the reference standard or measurement points.
  • Surface and temper: annealed or cold-worked, and required cleanliness.

Providing these details lets the supplier confirm the rolling and inspection route before quotation and avoids rework from mismatched expectations.

FAQ

What thickness tolerance can titanium foil achieve?

Precision rolling can hold about ±0.002 mm across a 0.02–1.0 mm range; standard ASTM B265 tolerance bands are wider.

Does tighter tolerance cost more?

Yes. Tighter tolerance requires more controlled rolling and inspection, so specify only what the application needs.

What else should I specify with foil tolerance?

Width, flatness, surface condition, temper, and the governing standard (typically ASTM B265).
