Precision Metals for Medical Devices
Biocompatibility, fatigue performance, clean surfaces, and controlled material history.
Where Material Performance Matters
Medical material selection must be based on the final device, implantation duration, mechanical loading, surface finish, sterilization route, and applicable regulatory standard. Titanium and medical-grade NiTi are the principal opportunities; metallic zirconium and Ti-Zr alloys serve narrower programs.
Titanium, Nickel & Zirconium
These materials are not interchangeable. The correct choice depends on the component, media, temperature, loading, joining route, and governing specification.
Titanium
Commercially pure titanium and implant alloys combine biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and useful strength.
Medical NiTi
Medical-grade nickel-titanium provides superelasticity and shape memory for dynamic and minimally invasive devices.
Zirconium & Ti-Zr
Metallic zirconium and titanium-zirconium alloys should be distinguished from zirconia ceramic devices.
Foil, Rod & Wire Applications
A practical sourcing guide for engineers and buyers. Final suitability should be confirmed against the specification, operating environment, and fabrication route.
| Material | Foil & Strip | Rod & Bar | Wire |
|---|---|---|---|
| Titanium | Craniofacial mesh, implant covers, surgical membranes, instrument components, and precision formed parts. | Dental implants, bone screws, spinal and orthopedic components, surgical tools, and machined implant blanks. | Orthopedic fixation wire, dental wire, surgical clips, instrument components, and precision woven structures. |
| Medical NiTi | Micro-actuators, elastic clips, laser-cut device components, and specialist minimally invasive assemblies. | Precision machined NiTi components, orthopedic devices, dental components, and instrument mechanisms. | Guidewires, vascular stents, orthodontic archwire, heart-valve frames, filters, and retrieval devices. |
| Zirconium & Ti-Zr | Special research membranes, device components, and surface-engineering development programs. | Ti-Zr dental implant blanks, selected orthopedic components, and specialist corrosion-resistant instruments. | Research devices and selected specialty components; not a mainstream general-purpose medical wire. |
Selection Priorities
- Specify ASTM F67, ASTM F136, ASTM F2063, or the exact customer-controlled medical material requirement.
- Control melt route, chemistry, inclusion level, transformation behavior, surface finish, and traceability.
- Pure nickel should not be presented as equivalent to medical-grade NiTi implant material.
Typical Components
- Dental implants
- Bone fixation
- Guidewires
- Vascular stents
- Surgical instruments
- Orthodontic wire
