Corrosion-Resistant Metals for Seawater Service
Long-life material solutions for ships, offshore platforms, desalination, and subsea equipment.
Where Material Performance Matters
Seawater systems combine chlorides, oxygen, biofouling, galvanic couples, crevices, flow, pressure, and difficult maintenance access. Titanium and nickel-containing alloys provide the principal opportunities, while zirconium is normally reserved for special process fluids rather than general seawater hardware.
Titanium, Nickel & Zirconium
These materials are not interchangeable. The correct choice depends on the component, media, temperature, loading, joining route, and governing specification.
Titanium
Titanium offers strong seawater corrosion resistance for heat-transfer, fastening, electrode, and subsea applications.
Nickel Alloys
Copper-nickel and nickel-based alloys serve seawater piping, pumps, valves, offshore production, and sour service.
Zirconium
Zirconium is generally not the economic first choice for ordinary seawater and belongs in specialist fluid systems.
Foil, Rod & Wire Applications
A practical sourcing guide for engineers and buyers. Final suitability should be confirmed against the specification, operating environment, and fabrication route.
| Material | Foil & Strip | Rod & Bar | Wire |
|---|---|---|---|
| Titanium | Plate-heat-exchanger elements, corrosion barriers, flexible seals, precision gaskets, and formed seawater parts. | Fasteners, pump shafts, valve stems, bolts, subsea connectors, and machined marine hardware. | Marine welding filler, MMO anode substrates, filtration mesh, aquaculture mesh, and seawater treatment screens. |
| Nickel Alloys | Seawater gaskets, diaphragms, heat-transfer parts, corrosion barriers, flexible seals, and brazed assemblies. | Pump and valve parts, shafts, fasteners, subsea connectors, drilling hardware, and actuator components. | Marine welding wire, filtration mesh, springs, screens, heating elements, and corrosion-resistant woven structures. |
| Zirconium | Special chemical-service linings, gaskets, and barriers on offshore process equipment. | Machined parts for unusual corrosive process streams where titanium or nickel alloys are unsuitable. | Special filtration, demisting, sensing, or laboratory components with validated fluid compatibility. |
Selection Priorities
- Review galvanic compatibility with steel, aluminum, copper alloys, graphite, coatings, and cathodic protection.
- Evaluate crevice geometry, stagnant zones, velocity, biofouling, temperature, and maintenance access.
- Select alloy and product form for the actual seawater, brine, sour gas, or chemical process stream.
